M2M (Ministry to Ministries) shares a special message from Harvesters in South Sudan.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6
As we read Proverbs 22:6 we probably envision a home with a mother where children learn by example from a Godly woman, where children have more than enough to eat. They play, they laugh, they have no worries. Mom is there to see to their every need, teaching them right from wrong.
But as Mother’s Day passes in South Sudan, we know that is seldom the case as many mothers die in childbirth and fewer still know the gospel and how to raise children. Kiden was 12 years old when her mother died. To help provide for the family, she was taken to a cattle camp where she looked after cattle for 2 ½ years. Then she was brought back home to look after her younger brother and sister because their stepmother was not caring for them. Her stepmother would often beat them and not feed them. Kiden is a child who has had to grow up too quickly, who already knows loss and the pain of suffering all too well.
In 2012, Kiden heard about Harvesters’ Primary School in Terekeka and asked her father if she and her brother could study with us. Thanks to your support they both are now attending school and have food provided for them. Even more importantly, they now have the influence of Godly women and men on Harvesters’ Terekeka campus in their lives. With the schooling Kiden has received, she has learned to read and write sentences and says, “I can also distinguish good from bad things.” She has emphasized that she wants to continue with her studies so that she can help her community to learn how to read and write, and differentiate right from wrong.
I praise God that I have an opportunity to serve as a mother to so many children in South Sudan. Each child has touched my life in a special way. As I have gotten to know them I have gotten to know the gifts God gave each one and learn what a special treasure each child truly is. I also feel blessed that God has provided friends like you who have made it all possible. Your generosity is touching a life today, changing generations to come, and growing God’s Kingdom.
With heartfelt gratitude,
